WELCOME

To the sixth edition of WC1E – the annual magazine for alumni and friends of the University of London.

Professor Wendy Thomson CBE, Vice-Chancellor of the University of London

I am delighted to introduce the sixth edition of WC1E. This edition of the magazine celebrates so much of what makes the University of London the inspiration it is; and at the heart of that is you, our truly global network of alumni.

Last year, we launched the University’s ambitious new five-year strategy Transforming Education…Creating Futures. It sets out the way in which the University will meet its ambition to pioneer unique forms of education and research that transform lives and society.

The past two years have been challenging for everyone and as a University we, like you, have had to adapt to a new world, shaped by the pandemic. I am very proud of our response as a global community.

With its unique history and position, the University is well placed to mobilise the collective power of its Member Institutions and to help connect London’s economic, social, cultural and political assets. We have pledged our commitment to supporting the response to the pandemic by joining the London Mayor’s London Anchor Institutions Charter. We are also leading on new ways to support society through the launch of the London Research & Policy Partnership (LRaPP).

Enshrined in our values is the University’s commitment to enabling social good through the promotion of a deeper, shared understanding of the world. Just one such initiative is the Refugee Law Clinic, which brings together expertise from across the University and its Member Institutions, helping to provide access to justice for some of the most vulnerable members of society.

Through our research promotion, we continue to shape intellectual and public debates, advocating for the importance of the humanities in boosting social cohesion and well-being.

Whether you studied in London with the School of Advanced Study, with our Institute in Paris, or through one of our distance and flexible learning programmes, you are a valued member of our global alumni community. Your successes and the contributions you make to your communities truly exemplify the strength of a University of London education.

I am grateful for the continued support that so many of you provide the University and our students. Initiatives such as the Alumni Ambassador programme and Alumni Voice careers events help enhance the student experience and allow students to benefit greatly from the insights that alumni provide.

I also want to thank all of you who make philanthropic donations, such as through our Student Support Appeal or by providing scholarships and bursaries. Your generous support really does make all the difference.

By harnessing the strengths of our global networks – our academics, our partners and our alumni – we are working to enable social good and transform lives through education. Thank you for your continued involvement in our mission.

I hope that you enjoy reading this edition of the magazine.
