Scholarship Support Opens Doors for Students
The University has a mission to transform lives through education, driven by our commitment to diversity, inclusion and access. By removing the barriers to study, we can ensure that more students around the world can benefit from education.
Throughout 2020 and 2021, University of London students were faced with unique and significant challenges. The pandemic has had a profound impact on many students’ personal and financial circumstances, in some cases creating a significant barrier to being able to continue with their studies. In particular, the University has seen a rise in the number of current and prospective students who are seeking financial help. That is why support for our students through scholarships makes all the difference.
With this support, talented University of London students are able to continue with their studies, benefit from a world-class education and use their degrees to make a positive impact on their lives and communities.
Donations from alumni, friends and organisations towards scholarships make such a difference for our students. They give these students not only the financial means, but also the self-belief, needed to complete their studies, opening doors to new possibilities.
Many students around the world have faced immense uncertainty and simply do not know how they will complete their degree programmes. The support of our alumni and friends is vital in supporting our global community. Thank you to all those who have supported us, as it enables us all to stand together.
Bill Abraham, Director of Development
This scholarship has allowed me to get a degree without going to University via the normal route, which was to go on campus and take a student loan. This would have left me in a huge amount of debt because it was not possible for me to pay for the tuition fees myself. I am looking forward to a bright future made possible by this scholarship.
As well as scholarships, the University offers hardship grants and bursaries to provide immediate support when students find themselves in urgent financial difficulties. Amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was never a more pressing need for this support. In response, the University launched the Student Support Appeal in July 2020, which ran for a second year in summer 2021.
The vote of confidence I felt on the day that I opened the email informing me that I had received the funding was, and remains, a source of motivation. Had I not have received this support, I would not have taken the financial risk to come here, and had I not have come here, I would not have gone through with my PhD applications.
In 2021, over 200 alumni and friends from 38 countries came together in support of our students. Their donations provided vital support to students in London at the School of Advanced Study, at the University of London Institute in Paris and those studying around the world via distance and flexible learning.
Without the financial help, it would have never been possible for me to get the exposure to higher education, being the very first member from my family to reach university. Thank you very much for the Váradi Scholarship. It has really changed my life and has opened many doors of opportunity which I yet need to explore.
