Celebrating the lives and work of Johnny Veeder QC and Professor Derek Roebuck

On 13 June 2022, the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS) welcomed guests from the international arbitration community to commemorate and celebrate the lives and work of the late Johnny Veeder QC and Professor Derek Roebuck.

Professor Roebuck's multi-volume history of arbitration has spanned 20 years, and several volumes have been hosted by IALS. Generous donations have ensured IALS Associate Research Fellows Dr Francis Boorman and Dr Rhiannon Markless will be able to complete the final volume of the series, ‘English Arbitration and Mediation in the Long Eighteenth Century’.

IALS were honoured to be joined in June by Susanna Hoe (left, widow of Professor Roebuck) and Marie Veeder (right, widow of Johnny Veeder), who unveiled the newly renamed Veeder-Roebuck Conference Room.

This space recognises the enormous contribution made by Professor Roebuck, along with the generous support of Johnny Veeder who continuously championed Derek’s important work.

The event was also an opportunity to thank all those who have so generously donated to the History of the Arbitration Project, helping to raise £182,000 and ensuring that this pioneering study can be completed.

University of London Scholars Programme launched

The University is proud to launch the University of London Scholars Programme, a new three-year £2million initiative which focuses on closing the attainment gap between students.

The initiative will provide a range of financial and pastoral support for around 30 students every year across the University of London, including all 17 of the University’s independent federal Member Institutions.

The University plays a key role in the London Anchor Institutions’ Network, with this initiative also supporting London’s recovery from the pandemic by providing significant opportunities to help young people across London flourish – while narrowing social, economic and health inequalities.

This new programme is made possible by the use of a number of the University’s endowed funds – some of which are the result of historic donations – as well as gifts from new donors, including those who give through the Convocation Trust.

French novelist Dr Lilia Hassaine speaks at University of London Institute in Paris event

In autumn 2021, the University of London Institute in Paris (ULIP) welcomed Dr Lilia Hassaine, French novelist, journalist and panellist on the television programme Quotidien, to discuss her latest novel, Soleil Amer, with ULIP students. The book explores themes of post coloniality, social dislocation, migration, family trauma, renewal and solidarity, and was nominated for the Prix Goncourt 2021.

We are grateful to Dr Hassaine for generously donating her time to the University for this special event.

In July 2022, the University was delighted to award Dr Hassaine an Honorary Doctorate of Literature at the ULIP graduation ceremony.

In addition to her Honorary Doctorate, Dr Hassaine’s sensitive and socially-engaged writing and reporting has earned
her prestigious national awards and nominations.

New alumni celebrate at University of London Graduation

In July 2022, the University was delighted to welcome graduands from our distance and flexible learning programmes to London for their graduation ceremonies.

The week of celebrations was attended by those who were due to graduate in 2022, as well as those whose ceremonies were sadly delayed in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Across the graduation ceremonies we welcomed a number of guests speakers, including honorary graduate actress Dr Joanna David. Dr David, who holds an Honorary Doctorate of Literature from the University, has been a valued volunteer for the Friends of Senate House Library, and kindly continues to support their activities.

As well as the ceremonies, the University was pleased to host graduates at Senate House for two Alumni Celebration Evenings. The events were an opportunity to applaud the achievements of these new graduates, and welcome them into our alumni community.

We would like to thank all those who made kind donations to the Student Support fund whilst registering for these events. These generous gifts ensure that students who find themselves in the most challenging situations, through no fault of their own, can continue with their University of London education.
